60th Anniversary Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On 10 December 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which confirms the acceptance of 30 fundamental rights, was adopted unanimously by UN member states.

In the run-up to the 60th anniversary, Amnesty International Mauritius Section (AIMS) will organize a series of activities that celebrate the UDHR.

1. On December 10th --International Human Rights Day-- you are invited to honor this day by participating in Amnesty International's Global Write-a-thon--the world's largest letter writing event. At the Caudan Waterfront, from 11h00 to 13h00, come visit us, talk to us and Write letters on behalf of prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders at risk of severe human rights violations.

Join thousands of people around the world for this monumental event.

2. On December 13th, we will organize a "Bus Tour" where members of AIMS will travel to all four corners of the country, mostly in rural areas, to present the UDHR to both children and adults. They will ask Mauritian citizens to sign a pledge where they will:

-          confirm their solemn engagement to respect and subscribe fully to the principles and values embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
-          acknowledge that every human being has rights, regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or age.
-          affirm that they are responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights.

3. On December 14th, with the collaboration of many local NGOs, AIMS will do a Human Rights Festival where all Mauritian citizens will Walk in the streets of Rose Hill to promote Human Rights. The walk will begin at 9h30 at the municipality of Quatre-Bornes and will end at 11h00 at the municipality of Rose-Hill. Please JOIN us for the GREAT WALK for the promotion of human rights!

4. In collaboration with the District Council of Grand-Port/Savanne, AIMS will present a Public Concert in Souillac (Jardin de Telfair) on December 14th from 15h00 to 18h00. Many national artists (musicians and dancers) will use their talent to promote human rights and inspire and engage new human rights activists throughout the country. This concert is free and we invite you to join us!!!
